Hey Tricia,
Maybe your right and I was a little harsh on Coney Island but I think the pictures stand on their own. I still think the city has let this area slip for far too long and it has become a place that is no longer remembered for being what it was in the mid 1900's. I hope the city revives it and it once again shows the promise that has. I'd be happy to come back in the summer and shoot some more shots of the area in during the summer season and let readers compare for themselves.

hello,
while I realize this is a photography site and this month's theme is NYC decay, it would be a shame if people came away with the misimpression that all of Coney Island looks this woeful. I happen to work in Coney Island, so I care. These are off season pix, for one thing. There are lots of celebratory pix on flickr of people enjoying the Mermaid Parade, the Wonder Wheel, the Cyclone, the sideshow etc. And big changes are coming in summer 2010. In December the City bought nearly 7 acres of Coney Island for nearly $100M from real estate speculator who blighted his parcels by emptying the area of amusements. Zamperla's New Luna Park will open on Memorial Day weekend! Please come with your camera and enjoy!
