So I got the first of my two adapter rings in the mail today for the E-P2 and I’ve been happily playing with this for oh about the last two hours and it’s been fun. To be able to strap a 70-200 f2.8 IS on a E-P2 and look at it resolve as a 400mm f2.8 is fun. Looking at the little E-P2 body with the 70-200 on it is also fun but in a funny looking kind of way.
But it’s not all green grass on this side of the fence, since the Canon EF lenses don’t have an aperture ring on them and the adapter does not magically allow the camera to change the aperture, your stuck shooting it wide open all the time. I knew this going in but the adapter was only $30 on ebay so no biggie and it’s still fun to shoot with this limitation, it’s another way to train your brain to look for the interesting shots with the equipment you have. You also loose the auto focus that the Canon lenses bring to the table but that’s not the biggest loss.
The one thing that did catch my by surprise was the detection on the Olympus side that your focusing and “auto zoom” in on the center of the frame to help you achieve proper focus does not work. I should have know this would happen as it’s the contacts on the Olympus side that tell the camera to do this but none the less it caught me off guard.
The build quality of the adapter ring is actually pretty good, it’s a little stiff with some of my lenses but attaches to the camera very easily. I’m sure the Canon side will loosen up with a little wear but for the time being it’s just a bit tight when removing the lens from the adapter.
I’ve also seen some possible ghosting in some of the images, I’m going to shoot some more over the coming weekend to see if it was just my first test subjects or if it’s the ring that’s causing the problems, more on this to come. Below are a few of the test images I took, I’ll post more next week along with a review of the Nikon adapter that should be arriving any day now.
