I’ve written this review countless times and each one has sounded worse then the one before it and for a long time I didn’t realize why. Then it came to me; Annie is a great photographer and the book has tons of great photos but that is not the reason to buy the book. It’s the perspective she provides on the life of a photographer that makes this book. Annie gives you quite the ride through her career showing you how she got started, how she works and a little bit of what inspires her.
It’s not about the photos stupid, it’s about the life and how to get the photos you want.
In a book that is about beginnings as much as it’s about the path, your exposed to the world on Annie Leibovitz, not only her life of today but of all the steps along the way. She starts you off with some memories of her childhood and some of the reasons behind her photography. Your then whisked away to college and the early days of the Rolling Stone Magazine. I can tell you for sure that if my photographs were being published even in a small magazine when I was in college I would have been inspired to stay longer. I can only imagine what it must have been like to be seeing your photographs on the magazine stand in the morning and attending a lecture from your professor on photography in the afternoon.
After the Stone and College your taken on a retrospective of some of the most famous shots Annie has taken over the years. The list is long so I won’t bore you with too many names but to give some perspective I’ll name a few.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger
- John Lenon and Yoko Ono
- Demi Moore
- O.J. Simpson
- Diane Lane
- Bruce Willis
- Judi Dench
- Jack Nicholson
- Queen Elizabeth II
- Hillary Clinton
- Barack Obama
The list is much longer then this and for Annie even much longer then what is in this book. Quite simply she is a great photographer who through this book shows more to us then just her photographs.
