All of the apps we’ve looked at so far revolve around editing photos on your iPad, were taking a turn from that today. LightTrac for iPad is an app that will come in extremely handy for photographers that like to plan shoots. More importantly they like to plan what time of day to shoot at a specific location. This app allows you to pick a location on the map and see the direction of the sun at any given time on any given date. A true blessing for any photographer that needs to know when the light will be just perfect for the shot.
How it works
You fire up the app and it starts to locate you, once it does your shown the main page of the app and the only page of the app. On top you’ll see a sunrise and moon rise charts for the day and month. Underneath that is a map of our current location along with three lines drawn on the map. The first line is the sun’s angle at sunrise, the second line is the suns angle at the displayed time and then the last line is the sun’s angle at sunset.
Last but not least there are a few buttons that you can use, first you can change the displayed time and thus the line of the suns angle at that time, this is the key the app you can plan for the shot you want at the time you want when the sun’s angle best suits you. The next button is Location which allows you to change the location to any location in the world so when your planning your trip to Rome and you want a great Coliseum photo you can find out when the light will be right for you. Along with the location and the time buttons you will also find the date button so you can look at the light at the date and time.
Who is it for?
It all works and works well if your a planning type of photographer. If you don’t sit down and think about what you did wrong the last time or how you will get it right the first time this app will be useless for you.
Areas for improvement
The biggest thing I found that was missing was the ability to see the sun’s angle at a specific time. If I could tell from this app not only the angle of the sun in relation to a specific area.
