So Lytro started selling their phase cameras this last week and it seems at least the technology bloggers out there are taking to the wires to talk about how cool this is. And no doubt the technology has potential to be a game changer but out of the gate it’s fundamentally flawed which is why I won’t be plunking down my $500 to pick up a camera.
There is a pretty interesting article over at the Camera Plus blog. They are comparing all versions of the iPhone camera to a Canon S95 and 5D Mk II with some good optics attached. The results are pretty amazing to say the least, the progression in the quality from each new version of the iPhone is quite amazing. Spoiler Alert: The 4s is starting to infringe on the S95 territory but is not quite there for serious users and does not yet come close to matching the 5D Mk II. It is however a great camera and it’s always nice to have one of those with you!

Pretty crazy the quality you can get out of a phone these days. Won’t replace the 5D but how great is it to have a great video camera in your pocket, always with you.
